
Vizhinjam is in Trivandrum District and is the proposed site for a large seaport. The place is at a distance of 16 kilometers away from the city. The sea is sufficiently deep to allow large ships to be berthed here. With the completion of the port it is expected to bring in a large number of trade as it lies close to the international shipping route. Thus the port is of vital importance to the commercial activities of Kerala. Port activities at Vizhinjam dates back to the 7th century when it was ruled by the Ay dynasty. The fort at Vizhinjam is the oldest in Kerala. Commercial establishments were established by the Dutch and the Portuguese at Vizhinjam. The place finds mention in various ancient texts. There is a rock cut cave temple at Vizhinjam with shrine of Vinandhara Dakhshinamurthi. Half complete figures of Shiva and Parvathi are present on the outer walls of the temple. Another important attraction in Vizhinjam is the Marine Aquarium with a collection of rich marine specimens . The aquarium has perfected the technology of Image Pearl Production technique by which any shape can be moulded in the shape of a pearl.
