Varkala is a beautiful coastal in the district of Trivandrum and approximately 51 kilometers from Trivandrum City. The place is home to the famous Janardhana Swami temple. People throng to the Papasanam Beach to take a dip and and wash away their sins.  The temple is a famous vaishnavite shrine and is said to be 900 years old.  The place is unique as the shoreline is dotted with high rising laterite cliffs lending the place a unique relief. The place has also some famous ayurvedic relief centers. The Sivagiri Mutt is also located here. It was established by the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. There is a mausoleum of Sree Naryanaguru atop the hill which is famous monument dedicated to Sree Narayana Guru. The cliffs are declared as a geographical monument and are protected by the Geological Survey of India. The sides of the cliffs are dotted with resorts and ayurvedic spas.
