
The history of Educational Institutions in Kerala dates back to the times of former Maharajas who patronised education and were instrumental in the setting up of many educational institutions. The opening of the first English School in 1834 ushered in the era of English education in the capital. The first arts college was set up in 1860-1880 during the reign of Ayilyam Thirunal. The setting up of the University College 1873 was a red letter day in the anals of Trivandrum.
During the period between 1885-1924 saw rapid progress in the establishmnet of colleges like the Sanskrit College, Ayurveda College, Law College and a Women’s College all during the reign Sri Moolam Thirunal. 1937 saw the establishment of the University of Travancore by Sree Chitira Thirunal who became its first Chancellor. It was later renamed the university of Kerala and to this day is the largest University in Kerala in terms of affliated colleges and enrolled students.
