Karyavattom campus of the University of Kerala will be hosting the 97th Indian Science Congress from January 3 to 7, 2010 here in Thiruvananthapuram. It is jointly organized by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the University. This is the first time the city hosts the Science congress and the second time in the history of Kerala. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be inaugurating the Congress on January 3. The theme of the Congress is ‘Science and Technology Challenges of the 21st century- A National Perspective’. There are also sub-themes on national focus, education and relevant thrust areas like agriculture, biotechnology, energy systems, environmental sciences, medical sciences, space science and technology and transportation.
Some of the highlights of the event are symposiums based on different sections of science, sessions for science journalists and children, university meet, exhibition and space summit. There will be endowment lectures and plenary lectures, apart from this, 14 parallel sessions and public lectures will also be held. The session for science communicators and journalists will focus on the theme ‘Advances in Science Journalism: Role of Space Science and Technology’. Another highlight is a half-day meet on Science Education. The space summit will focus on two areas – The Human Space Programme and Chandrayaan-1 results.
Some of the top scientists expected to participate are J S Yadav, director of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology; S P Gautam, chairman of the Central Pollution Control Board; D D Patra, head of the Agrotechnology Division, Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow; Avneesh Singh, director of the Regional Labour Institute; Gauri Sankar Mukherjee, joint director, GFAST, Defence Research & Development Organisation; Indranil Manna, professor at the Department of Metallurgical and Material Engineering and chairman, Central Research Faculty, Indian Institute of Technology and Pramod Tandon, Vice-Chancellor, North-Eastern Hill University.
