One of the busiest places in the city, Palayam, stands as an epitome of communal harmony with its various religious establishments. A place of convergence for many, the Kerala University, its campus, a market and other quintessential factors that define the city, is also home to one of the most sought after ‘Sarbath Kada‘ in Trivandrum.
Run by Ahmed Kabir, this stall is located adjacent to the Palayam Juma Masjid and the underpass. The stall was started in this shady location before 10 years. For those who know Kabir ‘Ikka‘, definitely know that he is a ‘no-nonsense’ guy with a huge ‘phonebook’. The syrup used is made by Mr. Kabir himself. When asked about it, ” there are lot of steps involved in preparing the syrup, the sugar has to be cleaned..” and the rest is his secret. The stall is open on all days from 10:30 am to 4 pm and on Sundays, till noon. He also sells dates, which he considers a bonus because people mainly come to him for the sarbath.
Another fact that makes the sarbath special apart from the special syrup is that, oranges are used instead of lemon. Though much revenue is not generated from this preparation, it costs Rs.5, as of now. Kabir Ikka definitely loves what he is doing, quenching the thirst of many, that too in a special way. If you have been there, there is no doubt that you will be thinking of going again and again. If you haven’t, its worth a try – highly recommended.

I went to this place today. He makes some good sherbaths!
on March 3rd, 2010it was nice if he reveals his secret of making sherbath , otherwise after 10 years we won’t be able to drink or atleast see any sherbath.
