The bikers and light motor vehicle driers will get a relief after reading this segment. The drivers of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), who always proved us invulnerable to the law, are now under police scanner. The Police took this initiative because of the concern over alarming rise in the toll of accident. The City Police have decided to hold awareness classes for the KSRTC drivers servicing in the city in order to brush up their lessons on road rules and safety regulations.
The first phase of the class will be held at KSRTC depot at East Fort on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This class which is organized in association with the Transport Department, the drivers of East Fort, Thampanoor, Vikas Bhavan and Pappanamcode city depots will be attending.
According to the statistics with the City Police, till May this year about 44 accident cases were reported in the city claiming 8 lives. The toll was 23 deaths out of 120 accidents in previous year when compared with 14 deaths in 109 mishaps in the year 2009. The figures during the first five months in this year suggest no sign of dip in the toll which forced the City Police to take this initiative. The fact is that about an average of 250 KSRTC buses are caught daily in the surveillance cameras for violating speed limits.
This awareness campaign will give emphasis to various aspects like adhering to road rules and legal consequences that a driver might invite for not abiding the law. Taking into account the complaints of drivers that most of the accidents were caused out of overwork, an expert session on stress management will also be incorporated in the class.
I think from now on the KSRTC drivers will no more be an ordinary motorist in violating traffic rules.
