The Kowdiar Palace is the home to the erstwhile rulers of Travancore. The incumbent Maharaja is His Highness Sree Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma who inherited the throne after the death of his brother Sree Chithira Thirunal Balrama Varma. The palace was built in the year 1914 by His Highness Sree Moolam Thirunal.
The Kilimanoor Palace is famous all over India as the birth place of the illustrious painter Raja Ravi Varma. The palace complex is huge and spread over an area of six hectares. The complex consists of large and small buildings including a kavu(sacred grove). The palace is around 300 hundred years old. Relatives of the present Royal family at Travancore reside in the palace complex.
The Kaudiar Palace was built in 1915 by Maharaja Sree Mulam Thirunal Rama Varma and gifted to his adoptive neice Setu Parvathi Bayi. The palace has more than 150 rooms and a wodden lift which is more than 50 years old!.
on June 7th, 2010Presently, Princesses Pooyam Thirunal Gouri Parvathi Bayi, Aswathi Thirunal Gouri Lakshmi Bayi and their families reside there.
on June 7th, 2010I do not know if the resident families will be able to keep up with the maintenance of these beautiful buildings and their compounds. If they really cannot effectively preserve the grandeur of these palaces, we the people of Kerala should through the government we elect, make sure these heritage buildings are looked after well without intruding on the privacy of the residents and without being a menace to them. Restoring heritage properties to their original status should be a priority. They are a reflection of a culture, that is slowly but surely fading into obscurity.
