Ethnic Weaves – This week’s special – Maheshwari Weaves
In the southwest of Madhya Pradesh flows the holy river of Narmada. On its banks lies the town of Maheshwar , made famous through the saris and turbans named after it. Known for it weaving the town owes its growth and that of its weaving to a single women, Ahilyabai Holkar , daughter in law of the erstwhile rulers of Indore . She started the tradition of weaving in the town by weaving saris and turbans for the royals and courtiers.
Maheswari sari is known for its fine cotton count, with variations of self stripes and checks in the body, woven in a plain weave with extra warp patterning for the borders and plain colored bands or zari for Pallu. Traditional Maheshwari saris have Maharashtrian names for its designs such as Mahswari bugdi, Chatai, Katari, Laddu Kinar, Rui phool etc. It is easy to identify a Maheswari sari by its structure which is an 80×80 count with a silk warp and cotton weft and its trademark border and pallu . Like so many other Indian weaving traditions the skills of Maheshwari weavers can adapt to innovations and designs are limited only by imagination of the designer.
