Nishagandhi Festival from January 20th – 26th

Today God’s Own Country will come alive with the exotic fragrance of the Nishagandhi Festival. This event will unveil seven nights that celebrates classical Indian dance and music. Sangeetha Nataka Academy chairman Mr. Soorya Krishnamoorthy will mark the opening of a weeklong festival that lends a touch of magic to the cool nights with a beautiful blend of melody and rhythm and creates a world of sublime beauty. This program will try to promote national harmony by showcasing the unity of India even while it comprises a lot of diversity. As many as 250 artistes from different parts of the country would participate in the 90 minutes show at Nishaghandi Open Air Auditorium, Kanakakkunnu Palace in the evening; all under a star lit sky in the lush grounds. This program will open with a song that carries the spirit and the performance explaining the central theme through various art forms. The event will begin at 6:30 pm onwards. Carnival at Sangumukham Beach on January 21st

The kite fliers of the capital are organizing ‘Beach Carnival’ at Sangumukham beach on 21^st January. This event is organized as a part of the ongoing Grand Kerala Shopping Festival as an initiative to encourage children and adults to spread the message of environmental awareness. This event will commence from 9 am and will include sand sculpture modeling, drawing and writing messages on sand to spread the message. This event is a unique competition to promote the art of sand modeling. In order to attract crown and amuse the children who are participating in this event, street magic will be performed by magician Raja Moorthy. Also musicians will be lined up singing western and country musics to entertain the participants and crowd in this amazing event. Renowned sand sculptures artist Deepak Mouthatil will be also present in this event to assist the participants and to spread Intel on the art of sand sculpturing. Guys don’t miss out this wonderful event as there are many attractive prizes apart from fun and entertainment.

Eight films selected from Kerala for the Vatavaran Film Festival

As many as eight films on environment and wildlife from the state will compete for the top honours at the sixth edition of CMS Vatavaran film festival on environment and wildlife to be held at New Delhi from December 6^th to 10^th. A 37-member jury headed by scholar and diplomat Abid Hussain has nominated 68 films for the festival. These include 51 Indian and 17 international films. The festival has more than 300 film entries from 28 countries including India.

The nominations from Kerala include:

- The Fall of Jatayu; directed by Siddharth M P and Kyrikos Stylianopoulos.

- Kaippad – The backwater paddy and fish field; directed by Babu Kambrath.

- The Bird Catcher; directed by Majeed Gulistan.

- Shelter; directed by Raghu Gopalan.

- Home – Our Garden of Eden; directd by Suresh Elamon.

- Vrischikathile Aalmaram; directed by Romy Victoria, Chita V S, Athira I B, Swati M S, Kavya M, Aswathi M and Anjali P M.

- A Pestering Journey; directed by K R Manoj.

- My Home Is Green; directed by Sajan Sindhu.

With eight nominations Kerala is behind Delhi with 21 nominations, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka. These nominated films will now compete for the CMS Vatavaran awards in various categories and also for the prize money of Rs 15 lakhs cash. The winner will be announced at a ceremony to be held at New Delhi on December 9^th. The film festival will be held at the Convention Centre, opposite to Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. This year’s festival has biodiversity conservation as the theme to highlight India as the venue for the ‘Convention on biological diversity (CBD) 11^th conference of parties in October 2012.

111 Days Long Soorya Festival commenced at Trivandrum

Soorya Festival which is one of the longest cultural extravaganzas in the world has commenced at the capital city. The festival will showcase contemporary dance performances by dance troupe Samudra and ‘Electra’ a short-film directed by Shyamprasad will be screened as a part of the inaugural events. The highlight of this festival this year is the film festival, dance and music festival, drama festival, video fest, painting exhibition and talk fest. Renowned artists from all over the country will participate in this festival. Singer K J Yesudas and danseuse Padma Subrahmaniam will perform this year as well.

Theatre Workshop by French Comedian ‘Francoise Clavel’

A theatre workshop is being organized by Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum for children as well as adults. This could turn out to be an excellent opportunity for beginners and a refreshing for the experienced adults. Through the fun of learning the children will not only know the basics of acting for stage and screen but also to explore and understand the world around them through theatre and drama. The theatre workshop will be conducted by Francoise Clavel (French comedian) in two separate sessions: one for the children and other for adults. This workshop function on many levels and are open to anyone who want to explore and develop their personal creative power in the art of acting even if they are experienced people. India Jaal – The ultimate magic summit

On August 13^th, numerous itinerant magicians across India will come together to perform the art of illusion and sleights in our very own Trivandrum. This magical event is named as ‘India Jaal’. India Jaal is a three day magic summit and will reflect the theme of national integration. This event will witness traditional magicians from the streets joining hands with the modern day wizards to celebrate the occasion of Independence Day.

This event is organized by the Magic academy of Trivandrum in association with the State Department of Tourism and is a corporate social responsibility project of the Cochin Shipyard Limited. The main aim of this project is to encourage and support the street magicians who are often neglected and endure hardship to keep their art alive. These magicians, far from receiving the recognition that the modern day magicians and international illusionists boast, are often considered outcasts.

In this event magicians from the states such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala will showcase their art forms. Magic classes by magician Darshwood (from Louiseville, US), who is known for his hand tricks, mind reading and hypnosis techniques will also be held. Apart from this, seminars and various competitions related to magic will be organized to create interest in magic, especially to the younger generations. A special show by magician Soorya Krishnamurthy titled ‘Fusion with mission’ will also be held.
